Job Description:
The position requires a good knowledge of the typicon and familiarity with the structure of the primary services of the church, i.e., Vigil and Divine Liturgy. Services are in Old Church Slavonic. The ability to read in Slavonic would be helpful. There is occasionally a need for English at weddings, funerals, etc.
Make-up of the choir:
Regulars inlcude a bass, two altos and two sopranos. There are an equal number of singer who come about half the time.
Does the parish have its own music and liturgical books?
Yes
If no, is there an allowance for copying and to buy books?
What is the normal schedule of services for your parish? Is the director required to be at all of them?
Saturday Vigil, Sunday Liturgy, Vigil and Liturgy for the 12 Great Feasts, and from time to time but not frequently for major saints. Vigils are somewhat shortened and do not last more than 2 hrs.
Regular choir practices, say twice a month, are desirable.
The choir director is expected to be there for all the services but there are people who can fill with sufficient advance notice.
There are no Vigil services other than for Great Feasts in summertime (between Pentecost and Labour Day).
Other comments:
This is a small but growing parish of mostly newcomers from Russia. People are quite devout. The current choir director has been appointed to the larger ROCOR parish (Holy Trinity) in Toronto but will work in close contact with the new director regarding typikon, music, choir members, etc. This is an opportunity for someone to develop and shape their own choir. This is essentially a part-time position so the director can seek other employment, but the salary will help cover housing expenses. Toronto has a huge Russian-speaking population so there is big potential for parish growth.
