Typesetting Manual

Special topic: Invisifying notes in recitative passages

  • If there are four or more words or syllables on the same repeated note, the middle notes should be invisified, using the "letter O" key (Mac and PC), keeping the outer two notes (first and last) visible; in older versions of Finale the syllables underneath the invisified notes will seem to disappear along with the note, but they will reappear when you redraw the screen
  • Three repeated notes should be retained
  • Every line should begin and end with a visible note
  • If a long word either begins or ends a recitative passage, it should not be syllabified, but after Note-Spacing has been applied, the word should be moved MANUALLY using the Adjust Syllables tool (under Lyrics), either to the left or to the right, as appropriate, and then the note itself should be moved using the "handles" in the Measure Tool.
  • A similar procedure should be used if one syllable of a long word has its own note(s) in a melodic passage and the rest of the word is on a recitative. Then the word is only partially syllabified (e.g., "man-ifestation" or "manifesta-tion")
