Preparing the music
- General preparation (marking) of music manuscript
- Determine whether the prevailing note-value (pulse) is a quarter-note, half-note, or, in rare instances an eighth-note
- Determine whether relationship of music to text is primarily
- Syllabic (one note per syllable)
- Melismatic (many notes per syllable)
- If Syllabic, figure 14-18 notes (pulses) per line of music
- If Melismatic, figure 18-20 notes (pulses) per line of music
- Mark manuscript ahead of time, noting where the line breaks will occur (Try and avoid awkward breaks in music or text)
