The PSALM Liturgical Music Resource
Special topic: Rhythmic groupings
- In certain types of chant, it is helpful to indicate triple (more rarely quintuple) rhythmic groupings that appear in the midst of duple or quadruple rhythm.
- If the chant is melodic in character (with notes present throughout the system), this can be done with horizontal brackets (using the Smart Shape tool) over the notes in the top and bottom system.
- In recitative passages with invisible notes this is best done using a horizontal bracket directly over the lyrics. (NOTE: the bracket needs to be drawn BELOW the lyrics and then moved up; otherwise the ends of the bracket will not face in the proper direction
- Whenever possible, one should avoid breaking up rhythmic groupings over system breaks and page turns
