Speaker Information
Timothy Scott Clark is the Dean's Teaching Fellow and a Lecturer at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary in Crestwood, New York, where he teaches biblical languages and courses in Old Testament. He is a graduate of Yale University (B.A.), and St. Vladimir's Seminary (M.A.), and is currently a doctoral candidate in the Hebrew Bible department of the Graduate Division of Religion at Emory University, where he is completing his dissertation on firstfruit offerings in the Old Testament. Mr. Clark's academic interests center on ritual in the Bible and its literary expression in biblical texts and the liturgical practices derived from them. He has published and presented on topics in Orthodox biblical interpretation, liturgical practice, and homiletics. Mr. Clark sang with the Yale Russian Chorus from 1995–1996, and continues to sing with the St. Vladimir's Seminary Choir since his studies there.
Alice Hughes is a co-founder of PSALM, Inc., where she currently serves as editor-in-chief for PSALM Notes and as treasurer. Ms. Hughes received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of the Pacific in Music Education with a choral emphasis. She is also a founder of the West Coast Liturgical Singing Seminar, which has been hosting an annual conference since 1994. She currently serves as co-director at St. Lawrence Orthodox Church in Felton, California, with Anne Schoepp. Ms. Hughes, with Anne Schoepp, produces and directs recordings for Seraphim Six Productions. They are currently in production on their fifth recording, which features music from the Feast of the Elevation of the Cross. Ms. Hughes has been directing choral music and teaching voice since 1981, is currently the director of choral music at Pacific Collegiate School (grades 7–12) in Santa Cruz, California, and teaches at Bethany University in Scotts Valley, California. She also works as a vocal coach and musical director for several theater companies in the Santa Cruz area. Ms. Hughes is a strong advocate for music literacy and spends much of her time developing materials and methods for increasing sight-singing and listening/intonation skills for choirs.
Anne Schoepp, also a co-founder and board member of PSALM, began singing in church choirs at age eight, studied piano, voice, and violin in her youth, and holds a B.A. in Music from Stanford University (1985) with an emphasis in choral conducting and composition. Ms. Schoepp taught piano and voice privately from 1985-1992, has been directing choral and instrumental music since 1984, and has organized the West Coast Liturgical Singing Seminar since its inception in 1994. She composes and arranges church music primarily for use at St. Lawrence Orthodox Church in Felton, California, where she is conductor together with Alice Hughes. She also directs the parish Youth Choir, teaches K–8 music at St. Lawrence Academy, where three of her five children attend, and directs the annual children's Christmas musical. Currently Ms. Schoepp and Ms. Hughes are in production on their fifth recording for Seraphim Six Productions, featuring music for the Feast of the Elevation of the Cross.
Valerie Yova is music director for St. Anthony's (Antiochian) Orthodox Church in La Jolla, California, and also director of development and public relations for Project Mexico. Before moving to California in 2003, Valerie was music director at St. George Romanian Orthodox Cathedral (OCA) in Southfield, Michigan, for 14 years and was a member of the voice faculty at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is one of the founders of the Orthodox Christian Chorale of Metropolitan Detroit, and served as chairperson of the Music Committee for the Council of Orthodox Christian Churches in metropolitan Detroit for five years. Ms. Yova received the Master of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from New England Conservatory and a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance from Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory. While pursuing a performing career and studying in New York in the 1980's, she served as a paid section leader at Holy Trinity (Greek) Cathedral in New York City and later as interim choir director at Holy Trinity (OCA) parish in Yonkers, New York. From 1989 to 1997 she served as director of development and outreach and then executive director for the Lyric Chamber Ensemble, comprised of members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Valerie has been serving as the president and chariman of the board for PSALM, Inc. since 2005, and coordinated PSALM's first national conference in 2006.
